Kindergarten News                                                        October 23, 2009

Highlights of the Week…

Religion

-The focus for religion this week was recognizing God as our Father and understanding that He teaches us how to love.

-We read scripture based on 1 John 3:1.

-The children were asked to draw someone who teaches them.  Some of their pictures included moms, dads, grandmas and grandpas!

Math

-This week the students worked with position words, i.e. top, middle, bottom, over and under.  They also compared groups of objects to determine which group had more or less.

Science

-The scientists made their own plywood!  They discovered that each thin layer of plywood by itself is not very strong.  Once the layers have been glued together they found the wood to be very strong.

Volunteers in the afternoon:

We have a woodworking table and all the tools to allow the children to explore with wood.  We need volunteers to come in the afternoons so 5 kids can go outside at a time.  Let us know what afternoon works for you to help out from 1:45 – 2:45 Tuesday through Friday.  We are happy to keep the table set up for the next two weeks!  Contact Mrs. Hawksford if you are interested.

-The scientists also began their exploration of paper.  Over the next few weeks, they will be working with ten different kinds of paper.  These include: construction paper, newsprint, kraft paper, cardboard, corrugated paper, tagboard, wax paper, tissue paper, paper towels, and chipboard.  Let your child go on a paper hunt around the house.  What did they find? Don’t forget the bathroom!

Literacy

-The children learned to print the lowercase letter /a/.  This is our first vowel.

-We encourage you to play auditory games with your child to distinguish the short a sound (apple) from the long a sound (ape).   Say a word and have them tell you what they hear.  Some possible words to use are: Annie, alligator, ate, Kate, cat, fat, fate, shape, sat, chapstick, bag etc…

-The students completed My Aa Book. Look for this today in their folder.  This little book is full of short /a/ words to practice!

Theme: Backyard Critters

-The students looked at pictures of the animals that live in the greater “backyard” of Seattle. Did anyone see a bear or cougar running around in the last 3 months?

-They made an animal track poster using stamps with the tracks of local animals.

-At another center the children looked at a powerpoint about owls (raptors) and sorted animals according to habitat.

-In December an owl from the Woodland Park Zoo will be coming to visit our classroom.  The next time you go to the zoo check out the fascinating raptors!

PUMPKINS!

In math next week we will be working with pumpkins.  The students will be predicting their weight and circumference. We have a medium sized pumpkin already. If you would be willing to send in a large pumpkin on Monday morning, we would really appreciate it!  Please email your student’s teacher to let them know.

Reminders

-Children may wear costumes to school on Friday, Oct. 30th for Halloween.  They may not wear make-up, masks or bring weapons.  Please note that your child does not have to wear a Halloween costume.  They are welcome to bring it to school in case they change their mind later.  There is no pressure.

-Next week we will begin a two week unit about Canada.  If you have artifacts to share, please put your child’s name on them and send them to school.  Tell us if it is okay for the children to touch these artifacts or just look!

Message from Eric Dresbeck, P.E. Teacher

Pheidippides ran from Marathon to Athens to tell of the Greek victory over the Persians. Now your child can do the same...

The Seattle Kids Marathon is a fun and easy way to become active in running.

Your child runs 25 honor miles between when they sign up and November 27th.

On November 28th they gather with thousands of others at Memorial Stadium to run their final 1.2 miles around The Seattle Center and back into Memorial Stadium. There are many ways to earn honor miles including soccer practice, dance class, swimming and raking leaves.

If you are interested go to seattlemarathon.org and register under the Kids section.

If you have any questions please contact Eric Dresbeck at edresbeck@asbschool.org

Reminders:

-If you have not sent in your $50.00 check for the kindergarten field trip and activity fee, please do so as soon as possible.  If this is a hardship for you at this time please contact Mrs. Davison.

Centers

-If you have signed up for centers, please be here at 9:00.

-CHECK THE CALENDAR- even if you don’t think you are signed up, please check anyway.  When someone does not come on the day they signed up for, it affects every child.  Our centers are hands on and require an adult for guidance.

-Please email Angele Hunskor if you would like to sign up for additional centers.  ahunskor@gmail.com

Apples, Apples, Apples!

Highlights of the week...

Religion:

-Our faith focus this week was that humans are formed in the likeness of God.  “I praise you for making me so wonderfully” (Psalm, 139:14).  Each child looked into a treasure box and saw their reflection.  Each one was told that they are God’s treasure, more important than all the diamonds, emeralds or rubies in the world!  Help your child appreciate diversity found within our world.  Consider checking out books from the local library on other cultures.

Math:

-The children continue to work on sorting.

- They sorted plastic bugs, keys, glass shapes, and a variety other objects found in our “junk boxes”.  Encourage your child to sort items around the house and ask them, “What’s the sorting rule?”  They should be able to tell you the “attributes” of the items they sorted and also what doesn’t belong to a particular group.  Some possible items to sort: socks, silverware, hair clips, toy cars or legos, cups, fall leaves and money.

-We began keeping track of the weather each day for our October calendar.  The children record the weather on ‘Our Month in School’ chart.  We will study the graph throughout the month looking for weather trends.

Science:

-The kindergarten scientists used sandpaper to change the shape of basswood.  Ask your scientist what was they collected on their plate while they were sanding their wood.

Literacy:

-The children learned to print the lowercase letter b.

-We brainstormed words that begin with the sound of/b/ as in ball.  They came up with bird, boat, balloon, bug, bread, button, book, brownie, basket, bear, and basketball.  Play this game at home.  Challenge your child to give you words that end with the /b/ sound!

-The children completed My Bb Book.  These books are coming home to go into the book boxes they decorated last week.  These book boxes are to stay at home.  A few have come back to the classroom.  We have different book boxes we use at school.

Theme: Apples

-In centers this week the children made apple windows and paper splits.

-The children took part in a taste test during centers this week.  We tasted Red Delicious, Golden Delicious and Granny Smith apples.  We made of graph of the results.

-The children came up with lists of words to describe the look, taste, smell and         feel of each apple.

Thank you to everyone who sent in apples!  If you have not yet sent yours in, please send them to school on Monday. We are making apple cider and apple sauce.

Volunteers Needed!

Kindergarten has been invited to make apple cider next week on a cider press that is over 100 years old!  Each class will go to Ann Nachtigal’s (former ASB kindergarten teacher) house.  If you are available to help out next Friday, October 16th, please email your child’s teacher.  KB will be going in the morning from 9:00a.m. until 10:30a.m. and KA will go in the afternoon from 12:45p.m. until 2:15p.m.  We hope you can join us.

                                    Kindergarten News                          October 2, 2009

Our first week of centers was a hit!

Highlights of the week...

Religion

-Objective: To recognize that the world belongs to God and to identify God as the maker of the world.

-Scripture Reading: Psalm 50:10-11 “The world and everything in it belongs to God.”

-We attended mass on Friday morning with Assumption parishioners.  A few family members joined us.

Math

        -Sorting

-The students sorted a variety of paper shapes and colors.  Look for their work today in their folder.

-Our calendar changed from September to October.  Our shapes from last month were put away and the children created ladybugs and         spiders for this month.

-The children will decide which pattern will represent the days of October using the ladybugs and spiders.

Science

-The kindergarten scientists used droppers with water to wet each of the wood samples.  Ask your scientist what changes they noticed.

-The scientists also needed to figure out how to sink wood samples in a basin of water using only paperclips and rubber bands.  Try this at    home!

Literacy

-The children learned to print the lowercase letter l.

-We brainstormed words that begin with l.  Some of the words were: lollipop, lemon, lime, lion, lamb, lips, and lamp.  A number of these words    are in their My Ll Book, which is coming home today.

-The children completed a book titled All About Me during centers and a paper doll of themselves to go with it.  These are on display and will       come home next week.

REMINDERS

-The weather has changed!  Please send your child to school with a coat AND a sweater/sweatshirt.

Kindergarten News              September 25, 2009

We all survived the first week of full days in pretty good spirits. All day school makes very tired kids (and teachers!)

The highlights of the week...

Religion

-The children browsed through their textbook looking for objects that remind them of church or God.

-They discovered pictures of crosses, people praying, church buildings, familiar Bible stories and the Holy Family.

Math

-We are working on sorting and classifying objects.

-Our new vocabulary words are sort, size, color and shape.  Have your child help you sort the laundry or silverware        to reinforce these concepts.

Science

-FOSS Kit:  Our theme for the next several weeks will be Wood and Paper.  The children explored five different kinds of wood.

-They are: redwood, pinewood, basswood (Linden tree), particleboard and plywood.

Literacy

-We have been reading and singing lots of rhymes.

-Favorite songs: Dr. Dingle, Dr. Jingle; Miss Mary Mack and         Down by the Bay

-The children learned to print the lower case letter “h.”        The key word is house.

-The children colored in and practiced reading a small paper         book called, My Hh Book.  Please have your child read it to     you.  Each week a new        letter book will come home.

-BOOK BOX: Please send in an adult size shoe box covered plain paper (i.e. grocery bag) by this Wednesday.  The children will decorate these next week and bring them home to keep their “practice reading at home” books.

Lunch was probably the most popular event of the week.  We are saying grace before meals.  After a few weeks we’ll introduce some other thank you prayers.  Thanks to all of you who are remembering to include place mats such as cloth napkins or washcloths.  If food is coming home, consider sending less food or making it easier to handle.  (See our handbook.)  FYI, our rule is that we do not throw food away, even crusts.   If your child complains about “too much milk” please send a small container of liquid in his or her lunch and let us know that we should remove his or her name from the milk order. Remember to include a spoon if one is needed for the food you send.  Remember to put a love note, with your child’s name on it, in your child's lunch every few days.  KA has two Peters and two Laurens.  Please remember to put a last initial so the love note gets in the correct folder.

Remember...it is tiring to be at school for six hours! Please make sure your child is going to bed on time and eating a healthy breakfast.  We suggest a quiet afternoon when school is over.  It is not unusual if your child has meltdowns or temper tantrums for the first few months of school.

At the end of the day, ONLY THOSE CHILDREN WHOSE OWN ADULT IS PRESENT TO SUPERVISE THEM MAY PLAY ON THE BIG TOY.  Older siblings do not qualify as supervisors.  Teachers are busy loading cars at this time. Please tell your child.

Thanks for all your efforts selling gift-wrap.  This is one of the main fund-raisers for ASB.  Keep up the great work!

KINDERGARTEN NEWS            SEPTEMBER 17, 2009

This week in kindergarten we drew self-portraits, practiced cutting, and had our very first all school fire drill.  We also started working with manipulative math materials and will begin making class graphs next week.  Math manipulatives and other small toys are very attractive.  Should you notice something in a pocket or in a bedroom that is new to you, please send it back to school in an envelope.  No questions asked.

Mark your grocery list!  Each Kindergarten family is asked to supply a box of crackers or pretzels for the school’s earthquake preparedness supplies. Other classes are supplying other kinds of foods.  Please send in your contribution next week.

Next week we will all be very tired by 3 o’clock.  Meltdowns  after school will  happen.  Please be sure your child gets to bed early, in order to get lots of rest over the weekend.

We will also begin the great adventure called lunch-at-school.  Please put your child’s name on the OUTSIDE of his or her lunch container.   Please read the Kindergarten Handbook about lunch.

-PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do not send Go-gurt or other foods in squeezable packaging.  One of those can take out all the shirts at a whole table in about 3 seconds.

-PLEASE do not send nuts of any kind. This would include things like peanut butter or any other “butter” made from nuts, trail mix, almonds, etc..

-DO put a love note, with your child's name on it, in your child's lunch.

-DO include a cloth napkin or place mat in the lunch.

Food that is not eaten will be sent home so you can judge the amount of food your child needs.  If he or she seems not to be eating enough, let us know!  We provide milk at lunch for those of you who signed up at Parent Night.

PE will be on Thursdays and Fridays for KA and KB.  Be sure your child is wearing appropriate shoes for PE on those days. Remember that the uniform code requires children to wear socks or tights every day.  It is time to send a sweatshirt or even raingear to school EVERY DAY. WE WEB-FOOTED FOLK GO TO RECESS IN NEARLY ALL SEATTLE WEATHER.

Children may bring ONE toy to use outside on the playground at recess if they wish.  NO LEGOS, PLEASE.  We encourage toys for active play. We have jump ropes and balls.  No toys with weapons or batteries.

If you have any questions, comments or great stories to share with us, email us at ahawksford@asbschool.org or cdelbeccaro@asbschool.org , or pin a note on your child’s clothing in the morning.

Center Coordinators are: Jen Wagner, Alisha Horey and Angele Hunskor .  Please call or email one of them if you cannot come when you have signed up for centers and you have already tried to get a substitute for yourself.

Each class needs a parent to take pictures of “events” in the classroom for the school yearbook.  Please notify your child’s teacher if you are interested.

If you bring your child to school before 8:20, be sure to take them to Extended Care.  There is no supervision outside the school building before school.  Do not leave your Kindergartener alone!  Older siblings should also go to Extended Care before 8:20.

Remember that school is dismissed at 2:00 on Mondays!

KINDERGARTEN NEWS        SEPTEMBER 11, 2009

Get a cup of whatever makes you happy and allow a few minutes to read this very long letter!  Today in your child’s backpack you will find their Go Home folder.  The inside left pocket will contain important information that you will need to read and return to school.  The inside right pocket will have papers or work that can stay at home.  Please return the folder with any papers or messages with your child the next day.

This week we practiced some of the million and one rules that are part of school.  We learned how to come into the classroom in the morning, listen to the announcements and the prayer by Ms. Hand on the intercom, and how to put our belongings away in the hall.  Then we found our places at tables and on the rug and we learned how to make a line and walk and whisper in the hall.  Our teachers taught us signals that they use when we need to listen, such as turning off the lights, clapping and bells.  We visited Mrs. Almy who counts the money that parents send to school, Mr. Bollard who is the school nurse and answers the phone and Mrs. Patneaude who helps everybody. We also met Mrs. Davison, who pays the bills. We learned that all of them give band-aids and hugs.  Ms. Hand showed us the telephone she uses to talk to us and we admired the toys in her office. We also met Mrs. Michaelson and Mr. Pozarski.  We practiced what to do when the fire bell rings.  We learned to wipe our hands clean and spread our napkins for snack and to put our cups and napkins in the appropriate places when we are finished.  Robert Fulghum had it right when he said that everything we need to know we learn in kindergarten!  Each day we began by singing a song followed by calendar activities.  Due to the half days, KA was able to go to music with Mr. Bahlman, library with Mrs. Throssell and PE with Mr. Dresbeck and Ms. Elisa.  KB went to music, library, drama with Mr. Othman and computers with Mr. Pouley.  Please help your child remember to wear P.E shoes on Thursdays and Fridays.

POSITIONS OPEN!!!  Opportunity to sneak a peak at your child in action.  HELP MAKE YOUR FAVORITE KINDERGARTEN CLASS FUNCTION WELL!  EMAIL or WRITE IF YOU CAN FILL ONE OF THESE CRITICAL POSITIONS.

KA and KB each need one volunteer to sort and file children’s work into Go Home folders every other Friday.  This will take about one hour and we would like to have them ready by 1:00pm.

We need two more volunteers for Center Coordinator.  These people will contact parents, as needed, to work in centers.

KB KINDERGARTEN AUCTION QUILT

This is one of ASB’s biggest fundraisers of the year.  KB is in need of two volunteers who would be willing to design and sew a class quilt.  We don’t need prize winning quilters, just someone to sew in straight lines.  Mrs. Hawksford and the children will create self portraits on pre-cut fabric, provided by the sewer and give them back to you.  Mrs. Hawksford has a binder of past quilts for you to look through for ideas.  We then send the top and back piece to a professional quilter to be assembled.  This is a fun way to get lots of volunteer hours!

ASB Valet Service!   If you are bringing snack or any other objects which are too big for your kindergartener to handle as you drop him or her off in the morning the staff person who opens the car door for your child will be happy to deliver it to their classroom.

Be sure the class name (KA or KB) is on the bag.   Do not get out of your car in the line.   At the end of the day, the procedure is reversed and we will put children and their belongings into the car and help buckle seatbelts.  Do not EVER get out of your car in the line!!!!!

At the end of the day we will walk the children clear to the sidewalk so that those meeting cars will be in the right place.  If you wish to let your child play on the play structure, you may take him or her back to that location.  Remember, no child can be on the play structure without their own adult watching.  Older siblings do not count!  Children may not play on the play structure before school in the morning.

Mark your calendar!  Curriculum Night will be Tuesday, September 15, at 7 p.m. in the gym.  Curriculum Night is the time we give you information about what we are teaching this year.  Please attend this important event!

1.      Kindergarteners need to bring backpacks every day!!!  Backpacks need to be large enough to hold a Trapper or Family Envelope plus lunch box and other stuff. Several children need larger ones!

2.     Please check your handbook for the uniform requirements and make sure your child is in uniform every day. Socks are part of the uniform.  White sweaters can only be worn outside. We are required to enforce.

3.    PUT YOUR CHILD’S NAME ON EVERY OBJECT HE OR SHE BRINGS TO SCHOOL.

4.    Be sure to pin a note on your child if your “End of the Day” plan changes, even for one day.  If your child is going to attend Extended Care on a regular basis, let us know the schedule.  Then you only have to tell us if that schedule changes.

5.    Be sure to put your family name and a clue about the contents on the OUTSIDE OF ANY ENVELOPE you send us.

6.    If your child looses a tooth at home, please let us know about it. If any children have lost teeth during the month of September we’d like to know about them also.

7.     IF YOU NEED TO REPORT AN ABSENCE BY PHONE, THE EXTENSION IS 85 AS THE KINDERGARTEN HANDBOOK STATES.  YOU CAN ALSO E-MAIL TO attendance@asbschool.org

8.  WE HAVE CHILDREN WITH NUT ALLERGIES THIS YEAR. WHEN IT IS YOUR SNACK WEEK, PLEASE READ LABELS TO BE SURE THAT YOU SEND NO CRACKERS OR OTHER FOODS MADE IN FACTORIES THAT PROCESS PEANUTS OR ANY FOODS WITH TREE NUTS OR PEANUTS.

*A REMINDER THAT KINDERGARTEN IS PEANUT/ALMOND BUTTER FREE THIS YEAR.  WHEN FULL DAYS BEGIN, PLEASE REMEMBER THIS WHEN PACKING LUNCHES.

The scrip parents request that you return the plastic pouches the next school day. We try to send scrip home the day the order was placed.  Scrip will be sent home in the red folders.

BIG TOY-PLAY STRUCTURE:

KA is able to play on the Big Toy on Wednesdays.

KB is able to play on the Big Toy on Fridays.

The sign up sheet is in the hallway outside our door.

Snack Families for Week of 9/14-17:  You will find a reminder page in your Go Home folder with suggestions and requests for the week. There are more ideas in the Kindergarten Handbook.

               KA: Gamble     KB:  Bullard

Don’t forget to sell your Sally Foster giftwrap!!!  Our first tally day is Wednesday, Sept. 23rd.  You may wear green free dress if you are turning in your envelope.

REMINDERS:

-Free dress on Monday, Sept. 14th.  Students may wear free dress on the first Monday of each month in school.

-NO SCHOOL next Friday, Sept. 18th.  Extended Care is available.

We have really enjoyed getting to know your children this week.  We hope for you (and us) a very quiet and restful weekend!

Your Kindergarten Team
