8A News – Mr. Szott

Welcome to 8A –

August 2007

Dear Eighth Graders and Parents,

Welcome to 8th grade!  Your 8th grade Block teachers this year are Mike Szott (8A) and Abby Drake (8B).  We anticipate a great year as we work hard and open new avenues for thought and learning.  Students will practice and develop important reading, writing, and research skills this year.  They will dive into some classic and eye-opening works of literature to accompany their study of U.S. History.  We will emphasize critical and ethical thinking skills.

Students will use a resource handbook to support them in goal-setting, decision-making, organization, and character development.  There will be a wide range of assessment for students to demonstrate what they have learned.  Finally, as your homeroom teachers, we will do all that we can to help students have an excellent and productive 8th grade year!  8th grade is a very special and important year, and we are both looking forward to the journey.

So, who is this new teacher Abby Drake?

I’m a native of Edmonds and a product of thirteen years of Catholic education (Holy Rosary School and Holy Names Academy).  I’m coming to Assumption-St. Bridget from the Lake Washington School District, and I’m really excited to transition into a new position in a Catholic school.  I’ve been thrilled so far by the warm welcome I’ve received from faculty and staff, and I’m excited to meet students and their parents in the coming weeks.  I’ve taught for six years, and have experience teaching Social Studies, Language Arts, French, and Leadership.

This year, I will communicate regularly with parents via e-mail.  My email is adrake@asbschool.org and I would appreciate an e-mail from one or both parents so that I can quickly create a group list.  (I won’t give your email address out.)  I check my e-mail often and it is a great way to share information, clear up confusion or address questions.  Students are also welcome to e-mail me with questions or assignments when there are printer crises at home, but they should make every effort to solve the problem first.

There are enclosures in this packet and I need these items by Friday, September 7th.
