<p class=3DMsoNormal style=3D'margin-right:-30.0pt'>With the <span class=3D=
GramE>rains</span>
this week came a flood of learning in literature. Among the highlights:</p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal style=3D'margin-right:-30.0pt'><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal style=3D'margin-right:-30.0pt'>In literature, we start=
ed our
first novel, <i style=3D'mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>Julie of the Wolves</i=
>. We
built background knowledge for the novel by reading non-fiction articles ab=
out
wolves. This coincided with a lesson about finding main idea in paragraphs.
Students learned a two-step process for finding main idea: determine what t=
he
subject of the paragraph is by looking at key or repeated words, headlines,=
 and
the first sentence. Once the subject <span class=3DGramE>is identified</spa=
n>,
figure out what the author says about the subject. What the author wants the
reader to remember most is the main idea. We also watched a video about the
Arctic tundra biome, and practiced taking notes while listening to informat=
ion.
</p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal style=3D'margin-right:-30.0pt'><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal style=3D'margin-right:-30.0pt'>For the weekend, studen=
ts have
been assigned to <span class=3DGramE>read through</span> the end of Part 1 =
of the
novel. While reading, I have asked students to identify character traits th=
ey
see in Julie, the main character. To help them, we learned about characteri=
zation,
<span class=3DGramE>or <span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp;</span>how</s=
pan> the
author reveals information about the protagonist. In Reader&#8217;s Handbook
(p. 340-341), we read about the ways authors often give info about the char=
acters:</p>

their
observations on a special bookmark. I have asked that they include at least
seven character traits along with evidence from the text that supports their
opinion as well as the page on which they found the evidence. </p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal style=3D'margin-right:-30.0pt'><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal style=3D'margin-right:-30.0pt'>In language arts, we pr=
acticed
words that have the &#8211;s and &#8211;z sound made by s in spelling. I did
tell <span class=3DGramE>students that if they spell all words</span> corre=
ctly
on the pretest that they will get an alternate list of words that focuses on
the same spelling rules. </p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal style=3D'margin-right:-30.0pt'><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal style=3D'margin-right:-30.0pt'>We also worked on rules=
 for
making nouns possessive. Students did well with singular nouns, but we had =
some
difficulty with plural possessives. We will review again on Monday before
tackling singular and plural nouns, and the differences between plural,
possessive, and plural possessives.</p>
